Fitzroy Island is a whopping 25 km east of Cairns in the Coral Sea. But get on that 45-minute ferry ride — the Fitzroy Flyer — and the landscape changes completely. It’s a real treat to be surrounded by the rugged beauty of Fitzroy Island National Park, where granite country meets tropical rainforest running right down to the beach and even a fringing coral reef — all protected within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
Plan The Right Amount Of Time
Getting to the 8:00 am ferry from Cairns is a bit of a pain, but it’s worth the early start when you arrive on the island just after 8:45 am, leaving you with a good 8 hours before the 5:00 pm boat heads back — plenty of time to fit in a walk, a swim and a spot of lunch without the day turning into one big schedule.
The 11:00 am ferry is a different story, though: you get to the island about 11:45 am, and while Nudey Beach and snorkelling are still doable in the afternoon, trying to fit in the Summit Track starts to feel like trying to cram too much into too little time. And with return fares from around A$99 per adult and A$55 for kids aged 4- 13, I reckon it’s worth taking the morning ferry and getting an extra 3 hours rather than trying to squeeze everything in.
| Time On Fitzroy Island | Realistic Plan | Best For | What To Skip |
|---|---|---|---|
| About 3–5 hours | Nudey Beach + swim or snorkel | Short visits | Summit Track |
| About 8 hours | Major walk + beach + snorkelling | First-time visitors | Several scheduled tours |
| Overnight | Hiking + reef + activities at a slower pace | Active travellers | Planning around the last ferry |
Planning around the last ferry is a must for a first visit — one full day is perfect. And if you are staying at Fitzroy Island Resort, you should definitely book that extra night so you can separate a longer walk from your reef time rather than just trying to stretch out the same old itinerary.
Choose Your Main Activity
Fitzroy works way better when one activity is the main event. Snorkel Safaris take about an hour and 45 minutes, while the intro versions take 2 hours 15 minutes. Add in the time it takes to get changed and check in at the Fitzroy Sports Hub,b and you’ve got a sizeable chunk of your day accounted for.
If the Summit Track is a must-do, walk it first and then hit the beach for a swim. If the reef is the main priority, make sure you’ve got enough time for it and fit in a shorter rainforest walk around it. Glass Bottom Boat trips, kayaking or paddleboarding are all cool, but try not to overload the day by doing too many of these things
Pick The Right Walking Track
For an easy taste of the forest, Secret Garden offers a 1 km return walk. The more useful first-time option is the roughly 1.2 km return walk to Nudey Beach, where several steep stone sections lead through rainforest towards the coast. The walk does double duty because the destination is worth staying for a swim.
The upper island asks considerably more. The Lighthouse Walk features steeper terrain and stairs, while the Summit Walk can take roughly three hours if the higher circuit is taken seriously.
On the ground, that difference feels more important than the distances suggest. Fitzroy rises quickly away from the water; this is not a flat island where another kilometre barely changes the day. Take the first ferry and the summit can sit comfortably before an afternoon swim. Arrive around midday, and it starts competing with the reef for time.
Check The Tide Before You Go
The photographs can hide an important detail: Nudey Beach mixes sand with coral rubble, and its usable area noticeably contracts at high tide, particularly during summer king tides.
The 1.2 km return walk, rougher footing and changing tide are good reasons not to reduce it to a photograph between tours. Wear proper footwear, come through the rainforest, then leave enough time to swim or snorkel around the fringing reef before walking back.
Plan Around Reef Conditions
Fitzroy’s advantage is simple: the coral reef starts close to shore, so there is no second long boat trip before you can snorkel.
For a couple without gear, an independent day starts at about A$258 — A$198 for the Fitzroy Flyer at the lowest advertised fare, plus A$60 for two snorkel sets. The guided Snorkel Safari adds A$79 per adult and is worthwhile if you want guidance and boat access; confident swimmers can keep the day cheaper and more flexible by staying on shore.
Let conditions set the pace. Wind, tide and visibility change, and marine stingers make current advice on protective lycra suits worth checking. Green turtles occur around Fitzroy and humpback whales pass through the wider Coral Sea seasonally, but neither arrives on cue.
Prepare For Rougher Terrain
Fitzroy is a continental granite island, not a flat coral cay. Tropical rainforest covers steep slopes above coral beaches, which explains both the rougher footing and the stronger walking experience compared with nearby Green Island.
I would choose Fitzroy when that landscape matters as much as the reef. Proper shoes earn their place in the daypack, but the payoff is the quick transition from coral shoreline to rainforest and elevated granite country — a combination that gives the island more range than its proximity to Cairns suggests.
Choose One Extra Activity
The Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre fits neatly between the larger parts of the day, as its current tours take about 45 minutes. Its timetable has changed before, so check the current Fitzroy Sports Hub schedule rather than planning around an old published time.
For travellers who would rather see the reef without snorkelling, the Glass Bottom Boat tour is the obvious alternative. A family ticket for two adults and two children currently costs A$69, compared with A$29 per adult or A$19 per child individually.
Kayaking and paddle boards are easy additions, but one extra activity is usually enough. Fitzroy is better when there is still room to stop rather than moving continuously between bookings.
Compare Your Day Trip Options
Green Island is the stronger alternative when flat circulation and easier mobility matter more than hiking. Its boardwalk, jetty and resort-area paths have documented wheelchair and stroller access, while Fitzroy’s signature rainforest tracks involve stairs, stone and steeper ground.
An Outer Reef trip makes more sense when offshore snorkelling or diving is the main reason for leaving Cairns. Fitzroy offers a different balance: beach, rainforest, walking, and an accessible fringing reef in the same day.
That distinction is more useful than declaring one Great Barrier Reef destination universally better.
Ferry Times And Day Planning
The best first visit starts with an 8:00 am departure on the Fitzroy Flyer and wraps up with a 5:00 pm return. With heaps of energy at the start of the day, fit in some walking, then break for lunch around midday — giving you time to chill out a bit before leaving the afternoon for swimming or snorkelling. If you’re not up for the Summit Track, swap it for a trip to Nudey Beach and let the day just blend together — walk, beach, and reef all just sort of flow.
You don’t need to carry a whole day’s worth of food from Cairns; Foxy’s Bar and Cafe near the resort will sort you out with some casual grub, and Zephyr Restaurant is another option to consider. Just remember to check the hours, so you don’t plan your lunch and then end up with a lot of free time.
