Newhaven is where many Phillip Island journeys get their bearings. Not long after crossing the Phillip Island Bridge from San Remo, this tiny seaside town comes into view, its own laid-back energy a welcome change from the hustle & bustle of the Western Port Bay, fishing boats, wetlands and a totally more chill coastal vibe.
When I first pulled into Newhaven I was struck by the change of pace – its not all about the big-ticket attractions here. The road suddenly feels less like a high speed highway and more like a coastal cruise. Thats what makes me think Newhaven is worth a wee stop: not because it’s trying to outdo the Penguin Parade or Cape Woolamai, but because it actually helps the day get into a better rhythm.
Understand The Gateway Before You Stop
Newhaven sits right where San Remo ends and the island begins, on the island side of the Phillip Island Bridge. If you’re driving from Melbourne it should take you about an hour & a half to get here – which makes it a nice little addition to a day trip.
The Phillip Island Visitor Information Centre on Phillip Island Road is a great first port of call – get your maps, ask for some local tips and sort out the rest of your plans. But the real reason to pause here is not the facilities – its the location.
Heres the thing – Newhaven is a gateway village, not a resort centre. Unlike Cowes its not all about shopping streets, nightlife or a big choice of places to eat out in the evening. What it has to offer is much simpler: a peaceful waterfront, easy access and a spot that lets you build a more balanced day on Phillip Island.
If you ask me you’d be a good fit for Newhaven if you enjoy pottering around smaller seaside towns, taking short walks and actually taking the time to soak up the island vibes rather than rushing from one tourist hotspot to the next. Cowes still makes life easy if you’re looking for a place to stay the night, but Newhaven is a better bet if you’re only here for the day.
Experience The Waterfront At A Slower Pace
The waterfront is where Newhaven earns its place on a Phillip Island itinerary.
The Newhaven Jetty is a modest stop, but it captures the character of the village. Looking across Western Port Bay, you see fishing boats, marina activity and a working coastal landscape that feels removed from the busier tourist areas.
What I liked about Newhaven is that it does not demand much from you. A short walk by the water, a few minutes watching the boats and a relaxed coffee can be enough to make the stop worthwhile.
For travellers wanting more than a quick break, the Newhaven Historical Walk is one of the best options. The self-guided route covers around 3.5 km and takes approximately 1.5 hours, connecting heritage sites with coastal scenery and local history.
Nearby Fisher’s Wetland adds another perspective, showing the native birdlife and wetland environment that surrounds Western Port.
Newhaven Beach is worth seeing, but expectations matter. This is not Phillip Island’s classic surf beach. Changing tides and conditions make it better suited to walking, fishing and enjoying the views than planning a full afternoon around swimming.
Choose The Right Stops For Your Time
Newhaven works best when you understand how it fits into the wider island route.
If you have 1 hour
A short stop is enough to experience the essentials: walk towards Newhaven Jetty, take in the views across Western Port Bay and use the village as a chance for coffee or a quick meal before continuing.
This approach works especially well if Penguin Parade is the main reason for your visit and you need to protect time later in the day.
If you have half a day
With more time, Newhaven becomes much more rewarding. Add the Historical Walk, spend longer by the waterfront, have lunch and include one nearby attraction without making the day feel rushed.
If you are planning a full Phillip Island route
A logical sequence is:
San Remo → Newhaven → Churchill Island → Cape Woolamai → Penguin Parade
The advantage is not only geography but flow. Phillip Island looks compact, but parking, walking and moving between attractions can easily take longer than expected.
Add Nearby Experiences That Fit The Route
Newhaven works particularly well because several major experiences sit nearby.
A Heritage Stop With Farming History
Churchill Island Heritage Farm changes the mood completely. After Newhaven’s waterfront, the landscape opens into farmland, heritage buildings and the story of European settlement on the island.
Checked in September 2026, entry prices were:
- Adult: A$17.50
- Child (4–15): A$8.75
The Churchill Island Walking Track makes it a good addition for travellers who want scenery without committing to a demanding hike.
A Dramatic Coastal Walk And Open Ocean Views
Cape Woolamai shows the island at a much bigger scale. The cliffs, surf beaches and coastal walking routes create a stronger sense of wilderness than Newhaven’s sheltered bay.
The difference is simple:
- Newhaven: calm waterfront, easy walking and a slower pace.
- Cape Woolamai: dramatic scenery and a more active coastal experience.
For first-time visitors, Cape Woolamai is usually the stronger natural highlight. But I would still keep Newhaven in the itinerary because it provides something different — a quieter moment before the bigger landscapes.
An Easy Indoor Stop For Families
The Phillip Island Chocolate Factory is one of the easiest additions to a Newhaven visit. Located at 930 Phillip Island Road, it is close to the bridge and requires little planning.
It is open daily from 10:00–17:00, with the last tour admission at 16:00.
It works particularly well for families, cooler weather or travellers looking for a short indoor activity. The nearby Vietnam Veterans Museum provides another option for those more interested in history.
Plan Your Stop With Food And Facilities
Newhaven is small, but it has enough to make a comfortable break during a Phillip Island day.
For food, it works best as a daytime stop. Saltwater Phillip Island is the main waterfront dining option, with views across Western Port Bay, while Island Organics suits travellers looking for local produce and a more casual stop.
The Phillip Island Visitor Information Centre at 895 Phillip Island Road is useful if you need current information before continuing around the island.
Newhaven can suit travellers wanting a quieter overnight stay, including caravan and self-contained accommodation options. However, most first-time visitors will find Cowes more convenient because it offers more restaurants, accommodation and evening activity.
Plan A Visit Around Real Conditions
Newhaven is best experienced during daylight, when the waterfront, wetlands and surrounding landscape are visible.
If you are combining it with Penguin Parade, plan backwards from your evening booking rather than treating Newhaven as a separate destination. The island’s attractions are spread out, and parking, walking and waiting times can quickly reduce your available time.
Driving after sunset also deserves attention. Wildlife is more active around dawn, dusk and night, so take extra care on island roads.
The practical details are straightforward: check tides before coastal activities, allow enough time between major stops and wear suitable footwear if you plan to explore walking areas. If accessibility is important, check individual locations before arriving because coastal environments vary.
