Coldstream Hills Cellar Door

I’ve always believed that the best wines have stories behind them, and Coldstream Hills Cellar Door is a case in point. The first time I stumbled into the Yarra Valley, my GPS had other ideas – it wanted to drag me up the side of Mount St Leonard, but eventually set me straight towards the rolling hills of Coldstream Hills Winery. I have to say, the landscape proved to be much more reliable than my GPS, and the Pinot Noir even more so. As someone who has spent years chasing cool-climate drops all over Australia’s high country & valleys tucked under the Great Dividing Range for Oleksandr Honcharenko, I reckon this place still has something special about it: a sense of authenticity, elegance & a cellar door that welcomes you in like you’re an old mate.

Whether you’re travelling solo or on a trip organised by AustraliaTours, the cellar door is a great fit for the type of traveller who loves boutique winemaking, scenic views, and genuine hospitality.

History & Founding

History & Founding

Coldstream Hills was founded back in 1985 by the legendary James Halliday, one of Australia’s best-known wine writers and critics. His vision was to keep it simple: build a small winery that would showcase the Yarra Valley’s potential for cool-climate wines. He deliberately chose hillside sites in the Lower Yarra Valley, selected a few precision-focused French clones, and pursued careful viticulture rather than churning out high volume.

Now the winery’s vineyards – Deer Farm Vineyard, Beenak Vineyard, and Fernhill Vineyard – are as well known for being benchmarks for elegant cool climate expressions as anything else. Coldstream Hills quickly made a name for itself for meticulous winemaking and a commitment to producing wines that do justice to the soil, the season and the site they come from.

Someone once told me that Halliday didn’t build a showy winery – he built a philosophy. After tasting through the range over the years, I reckon that sums it up pretty well.

Award-Winning Wines And Varietals

The Yarra Valley’s Coldstream Hills is in the sweet spot of producing delicious, wine show-winning wines – thanks to the valley’s cool climate. Pinot Noir to their special-edition sparkling releases, all of their wines seem to feature in wine shows and receive plenty of press attention. Boutique sparkling wines – they really are pushing the boundaries here, with a Méthode Traditionelle and some limited-release Blanc de Noir wines.

Award-Winning Wines And Varietals

What The Winery Is Best Known For

  • Pinot Noir: Elegant, layered and just the right choice if you are looking for something from the Deer Farm or Upper Yarra blocks.
  • Chardonnay: Crisp and refined with a little bit of French oak to add some character. And don’t even get me started on their Chardonnay 2024 release – it’s a real standout.
  • Sauvignon Blanc: Lively and full of flavour – with top notes that just jump out at you.
  • Shiraz and Syrah: This one’s all about spice and finesse, as the vines really get to show off in the cool climate.
  • Cabernet Sauvignon: If you are after something a bit more structured, special-edition sparkling releases, and all of their wines seem to feature in wine shows and receive plenty of press attention. Their small releases are worth keeping an eye out for.
  • Boutique sparkling wines – they really are pushing the boundaries here, with a Méthode Traditionelle and some limited-release Blanc de Noir wines.
  • Single-vineyard wines: we have been really enjoying the Deer Farm, Beenak, special-edition sparkling releases, and Fernhill releases.
  • You’ll never go wrong with a handful of their standout wines – like Pinot Noir Chardonnay 2017.

It’s the valley’s cool climate that really sets Coldstream Hills apart – great altitude, cool breezes and a stunning backdrop of mountains all combine to give their wines a certain special something – and the fact that they really do age well is just the icing on the cake.

Cellar Door Experience

Perched up on the hill, looking out over the vineyards and sweeping valley views, the cellar door at Coldstream Hills really does offer one of the most genuine cellar door experiences in the whole region. Compared to some of the other bigger and more glitzy cellar doors around – like Oakridge Cellar Door, Rochford Wines, Tokar Estate Winery, St Hubert’s Wines, Levantine Hill Estate and of course Domaine Chandon, Coldstream Hills keeps it real and keeps it simple.

When you visit, behind the scenes, you can expect to gain valuable insights into the wines from people who are genuinely passionate about their work. Want to know the differences between clones or what makes the Upper Yarra Valley such a special place? Your hosts are happy to discuss any of this and are always happy to share some behind-the-scenes information.

What To Expect When You Visit

  • structured tastings of their Reserve wines and single vineyard wines.
  • A lovely outdoor area where you can sit back and take in the scenic views – and bring your dog along too.
  • Some great spots to sit and relax with a glass of wine, all while taking in the rolling hills.
  • knowledgeable staff who are not just across the wines, but also genuinely enthusiastic and happy to share their stories.
  • And every now and then, you might even get to sneak a peek at the James Halliday Cellar for some back-vintage tastings.

I’m pretty sure I once spent 30 minutes – or maybe more – trying to get a handle on the taste of a Chardonnay that a tasting host described as being like ‘ the upper canopy of the valley in spring’. And to be honest, I still have no idea what that means. But – and this is the important bit – the wine was really, really good. & I’ve been back with friends as many as 5 – 6 times

Wine Tastings And Events

The folks at Coldstream Hills offer a strong lineup of wine tastings, with curated flights, private tastings, and in-depth winemaking experiences that explore the vineyard’s inner workings. These sorts of things often get into the nitty-gritty of techniques like whole-bunch pressing, the way the French clones grow under certain conditions, or the differences in the wines from the Deer Farm and Beenak blocks.

Tips For A Better Tasting

  • make a booking any time of year, especially during spring and autumn when the place is buzzing.
  • Don’t be shy about asking about those super-rare small-batch vintages.
  • Do give their sparkling wines a go – the Methode Traditionelle is definitely worth trying.
  • If you can, get a handle on what food and wine pairings they’re doing with some of the local gourmet food.
  • When you’re joining a vineyard tour, be sure to leave some time to wander around the terrace at your leisure.

I do a pretty good impression of a pro sometimes, as I did with a Reserve Pinot tasting once, till I knocked the whole flight over in one go like a bunch of dominoes. The staff handled it with style, but I’m afraid I didn’t quite bounce back so well.

Seasonal Considerations For Travellers

The Yarra Valley is pretty gorgeous all year round, but each season’s got its own rhythm. Having travelled around Australia has taught me that the weather‘s got a wicked sense of humour – especially in wine country.

Practical Seasonal Notes

  • Keep an eye on Vic Emergency during the summer months – bushfires can easily get in the way of your travels and reduce visibility.
  • Maroondah Highway can become a traffic crawl after a heavy downpour.
  • mobile reception seems to drop out in sections of the Upper Yarra – download offline maps before you leave, so you don’t get caught out.
  • wildlife at dusk, especially roos – you’ll see them out in the evenings.
