Lake Mountain Snow Trip is a simple way to get away from Melbourne in the winter. In only a few hours, you can go from the city to the mountains and breathe in the fresh alpine air. We visit Lake Mountain Alpine Resort, the closest snow destination to the city. It’s ideal for a short winter getaway without going far.
This calm alpine playground is ideal for families, first-time snow visitors, and anyone who wants to experience genuine snow without the crowds of a big ski resort. Think toboggan slides, snow play areas, and clear mountain vistas. All the fun, but none of the scary lift lines.
Join us on our winter Lake Mountain excursion for a fun day out in Melbourne’s closest alpine resort, which is just around 90 minutes from the city. This excursion is perfect for those who have never been to the snow before. You may make your own snowman, go down the toboggan slopes, and enjoy the beautiful snowy mountain scenery.
Along the journey, learn about the best things to see in the area. Then, end your afternoon with chocolate samples at the famous Yarra Valley Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery and a calm nature walk to Steavenson Falls in the lovely town of Marysville.
Leave Melbourne and start your day with a magnificent drive through the undulating vineyards and wooded ridgelines of the Yarra Valley. Then, head up to the winter wonderland of Lake Mountain Alpine Resort, the closest alpine resort to the city. You switch from traffic lights to snow gums in around 90 minutes. It’s a smooth, family-friendly snowfield that’s great for beginners, families, and anybody who wants winter fun without the stress of a huge ski resort.
As we drive through the valley, relax and take in the vast countryside, towering eucalyptus trees, and fresh country air before we reach the summit. Up top, the layout is welcoming — snow-covered trees, traditional mountain chalets, and clearly defined snow play areas. The toboggan parks are spacious, the atmosphere is laid-back, and everyone can move at their own pace. Lake Mountain is also home to Australia’s largest network of cross-country ski trails, giving you the option to glide gently through the forest or simply wander across the snow.
You can build a snowman, practice your snowball throwing, race down the slopes on a toboggan, or simply stand still and admire the alpine scenery. There’s no pressure — just fresh mountain air, snowy landscapes, and the perfect winter atmosphere.
Please note: Tickets for the Village Toboggan Run and Mini Toboggan Run are available for purchase on arrival.
Unlike many alpine resorts, our coach drops you directly at the resort entrance, meaning no shuttle buses or chairlifts are required. Once there, you’ll enjoy approximately three hours of free time to explore at your own pace — whether that’s tobogganing, taking easy summit walks, or discovering the famous trail network.
Along the way, there are opportunities to support local makers and bakers, beginning with an optional stop at the iconic Beechworth Bakery in Healesville. Guests may also purchase meals at the Lake Mountain café (own expense).
After descending from the mountains, we continue to Steavenson Falls, one of Victoria’s highest waterfalls. We then visit the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery, a local favourite for handcrafted chocolates, rich hot chocolate, and seasonal ice creams.

Yes, many families with children of all ages go on this trip. But you can’t keep prams and strollers in the car. Families should also dress their kids in warm, waterproof clothing (not gumboots) since the snow play areas may be chilly and treacherous.
The walks on this schedule are short and easy, so most people can do them. Because snow may make surfaces slippery, it’s best to wear shoes with excellent tread. During their free time at Lake Mountain, guests may choose how much or how little to explore.
There are several places to buy meals during the day, such as Beechworth Bakery in Healesville, the café on the mountain, and later at the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery. Meals are not included. If you choose, you may bring your own lunch or snacks.
This tour lets you choose how you want to do things. Your driver-guide will provide you with information and comments, but you will have to direct yourself while you play in the snow, go tobogganing, stroll, or explore. This lets you experience the snow at your own pace and choose what you are comfortable with.
