Experience the Larapinta Trail

The Larapinta Trail crosses more than 230 kilometres of Central Australia, tracing the ranges west from Alice Springs through Tjoritja / West MacDonnell National Park. Divided into 12 sections, it can be tackled as an end-to-end trek or experienced through shorter walks across rocky ridgelines, deep gorges, dry riverbeds and sheltered waterholes. Beginning at Alice Springs Telegraph Station, the trail extends west towards Mount Sonder. Individual sections range from 8.9 kilometres between Ormiston Gorge and the Finke River to almost 29 kilometres, yet distance alone does not determine difficulty. Exposed quartzite ridges, steep climbs, rocky terrain and sheltered valleys can make sections of similar length feel very different. Some of Central Australia’s best-known landscapes lie along or close to the route. Simpsons Gap and Standley Chasm appear earlier in the journey; further west, Ormiston Gorge, Redbank Gorge and Mount Sonder become major landmarks. Together, they range from narrow rock walls and waterholes to exposed ridgelines and elevated desert views.

Things to Do Along the Larapinta Trail

Walking defines the Larapinta Trail, but experiencing it does not require an end-to-end trek. Guided day hikes and shorter walks around places such as Standley Chasm and Ormiston Gorge provide access to distinctive sections of the ranges without committing to a multi-day crossing. Waterholes and natural pools reveal another side of the landscape, although swimming conditions and access vary by location. Clear desert air and changing light favour photography, while wildlife, native plants and dark night skies add to the experience along the route. Cultural experiences provide important context, introducing the continuing connection between Arrernte people and the Country crossed by the Larapinta Trail.

Walk the Trail Your Way

Across the 12 sections, difficulty ranges from Grade 3 moderate to Grade 5 difficult. Some suit day walks; others involve long distances, steep climbs or overnight camping. Most have vehicle access at or near their trailheads, allowing shorter itineraries to be chosen according to landscape, difficulty and available time. For an end-to-end journey, allow around 20 days to complete the full 231-kilometre route, including rest, side trips and food resupply. Shorter itineraries can concentrate on selected sections, making the Larapinta experience possible without completing the entire crossing.
