Mount Macedon

Mount Macedon, only about an hour from Melbourne in Victoria’s scenic Macedon Ranges, is a perfect blend of the Mount Macedon Memorial Cross, the 1,011-metre-high Camel’s Hump, Sanatorium Lake, a historic gardens and a walk through the beautiful Macedon Regional Park.
What really stuck with me was the contrast between the native mountain forest and the European-influenced estates that have been planted across the cooler slopes of Mount Macedon. You definitely shouldn’t come here, just look at one view, and leave. I reckon you should give yourself at least half a day to see the Cross, take a walk, visit a garden, or have a picnic somewhere.

Why Mount Macedon Deserves A Stop

If you’re after a Melbourne day trip that combines mountain scenery, walking, and a good dose of history, Mount Macedon is a great choice. Camel’s Hump reaches 1,011 metres, making it the highest point in the Macedon Ranges. The Memorial Cross sits at roughly 1,001 metres, still an impressive elevation. One gives you the natural high point and views; the other is the mountain’s defining historical landmark.

Plan on 3–4 hours for the main highlights, or make it a full day if you want to tackle a longer walk, explore a garden and stop for lunch.

At Forest Glade Gardens, children under 16 are free to enter. During the April 2026 Autumn Garden Trail, Duneira charged A$15 for garden entry and A$30 for the house, garden and art collection. Those were event-specific prices, though, so check the current ticket prices before heading out.

Start With The Memorial Cross

The 21-metre Mount Macedon Memorial Cross, which commemorates Australians who have served in wars and conflicts, is the natural place to start. It reopened on 25 April 2026 following major works.

From Cameron Drive, sealed paths lead towards the Cross and Major Mitchell Lookout. They’re accessible to people with limited mobility, although there are a few steps immediately around the monument.

I reckon the Cross makes the best introduction because you get some of the mountain’s history while also getting your bearings before heading into the forest.

Look Beyond The Monument

Major Mitchell Lookout offers impressive views of Hanging Rock, but Mount Macedon’s weather is notoriously changeable. Visibility can disappear quickly, so don’t make a distant panorama the whole reason for coming — treat it as a bonus.

Climb To Camel's Hump

At 1,011 metres, Camel’s Hump is the highest point in the Macedon Ranges. I’d choose the Memorial Cross for history and easier sightseeing, but Camel’s Hump for the more satisfying short climb.

Camel’s Hump and Hanging Rock are both mamelons, volcanic formations created around six million years ago as thick lava forced its way through narrow vents.

This is also the designated rock climbing area within Macedon Regional Park. Climbing is restricted to the specified zone, with Parks Victoria recommending it for experienced climbers or those under the guidance of suitably qualified instruction.

Choose A Walk Through The Regional Park

The Macedon Ranges Walk combines 18.8 kilometres of walking and multi-use tracks through Mount Macedon Regional Park, connecting the Memorial Cross, Camel’s Hump, Sanatorium Lake and several picnic areas. Most sections are Grade 3, ranging from moderate to difficult, largely due to the steep slopes.

Don’t treat the full 18.8 km as something to tack onto a day of sightseeing. Make it the day’s main activity, or choose a shorter section if you also want time for the gardens.

Slow Down At Sanatorium Lake

For an easier forest experience, I’d choose Sanatorium Lake over adding another lookout.

Its name comes from the Macedon Sanatorium for Consumptives, established here when cool mountain air was believed to aid in treating tuberculosis. The lake was constructed as a water supply for a larger sanatorium that was proposed but never completed.

Swimming and fishing are prohibited. Parking near the lake is limited, making Days Picnic Ground a useful alternative starting point for the Sanatorium Lake Eco-Trail.

Explore The Historic Gardens

Mount Macedon’s historic estates really show off its unusual blend of native forest and the sort of European-style gardens you might expect to find around an old English country estate.

Forest Glade Gardens covers almost 6 hectares (14.5 acres), bringing together English, Italian, Asian and woodland garden styles. Adult admission is A$15, while children under 16 enter free. Last entry is at 4.30 pm, and the gardens close on Total Fire Ban days. There is also no on-site parking, something worth knowing before you arrive.

Duneira Estate has a different character, centred on its 1870s Italianate Victorian house, historic garden and art collection. Opening hours and ticket arrangements can vary, so check ahead before building your day around a visit.

Turn It Into A Full-Day Trip

For half a day, I’d do the Memorial Cross, then choose Camel’s Hump for views or Sanatorium Lake for forest, followed by Forest Glade if gardens interest you.

With a full day, add a longer walk, lunch, or a visit to Hanging Rock Reserve. Hanging Rock is famous through Joan Lindsay’s Picnic at Hanging Rock and Peter Weir’s film, but the geological connection is just as interesting: it shares Camel’s Hump’s unusual mamelon geology.

Don’t combine the full 18.8 km walk with a thorough visit to Hanging Rock unless hiking is the main purpose of your day.

Alternatively, finish at a cellar door such as Mount Macedon Winery or Mount Towrong Vineyard, the latter of which is particularly associated with Italian-style wines.

Plan Your Visit

Mount Macedon is around an hour to an hour and a half from Melbourne by car, depending on traffic. The Calder Freeway is the main approach and the most practical option for a day trip.

Macedon Railway Station offers train service, but getting around becomes more complicated once you arrive. With the Cross, Camel’s Hump, Sanatorium Lake and gardens spread across the mountain, a car gives you considerably more flexibility.

Pack water, good walking shoes and an extra layer, even in summer. Some park roads are only open seasonally, and Macedon Regional Park closes on days with a Catastrophic Fire Danger Rating.

Check Parks Victoria before leaving, especially if you’re planning a longer walk. Garden opening times, fire restrictions, road access and parking arrangements can all change.
